Tenchu Z Demo Impressions

The "Tenchu Z" demo was made available last Thursday on Xbox Live Marketplace as a 642MB download but I've only just got around to trying it out.

Tenchu has been around for a fairly long time now and this demo gives you the opportunity to play a "Harbour Town" level from the latest instalment in the series. Your mission is to find out what goods a trader is importing but before you can start you have to choose your characters gender, face and costume from a number of different options. I have to admit that I found a few of the face types to be quite hideous, especially some of the female ones which didn't look right to me. Once you've decided upon the look of your character you can distribute various ability points between "Vitality", "Strength", and "Agility".

It's up-to you how you get to the ship where the trader is located, and there's plenty of rooftops to clamber onto so you can avoid the numerous guards that roam the streets if you don't fancy a direct confrontation. Your character is armed with a sword but your most efficient means of dispatching enemies is from behind while they are unawares. This allows you to take them out in one hit rather than a prolonged sword fight, but you could knock them unconscious if you prefer. To help you in your mission you have a number of items, such as shuriken, which are accessed via the d-pad. The demo really doesn't give you any information about them so your only means of determining what they are is by using them.

The enemy AI isn't the best in the world as each guard has a predetermined patrol route which won't change unless your detected. I also found that guards seem to have a limited range of vision and although you may be directly in front of a guard and in plain site you won't be detected unless you get too close.

I found the controls fairly frustrating, causing me to drop off a rooftop or miss-time a jump at the most inconvenient of times and they felt like they were lifted from one of the games predecessors. The graphics are not great with character models lacking detail and the town lacking atmosphere, for a harbour town there was a distinct lack of civilians. The in-game graphics engine is also used in cut scenes which is not unusual these days, but the facial models do not animate along with dialog. This was forgivable for PlayStation (one) title but not something I'd expect to see in an Xbox 360 game.

Despite all these flaws I quite enjoyed the demo but in its present state it's not something I'd think about buying. The game does not look like it's going to push any boundaries but I'm sure it will have its own set of fans.

Elite Beat Agents July Release Date

Finally "Elite Beat Agents" has been given a European release date of July 13th. The Nintendo DS rhythm game is the westernised version of the frequently imported Japanese original "Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan" with government agents replacing black clad cheerleaders and a new track listing replacing the J-Pop listing of the original.

The game has been available in the US since November 6th 2006 and Japan has recently seen the release of its successor "Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2"

I've been tempted to import Ouendan and Elite Beat Agents on a number of occasions but for some reason or another never got around to it. I've got a feeling I may pick this game up at some point after it's released as it's piqued my curiosity.

Pac-Man Championship Edition

It's Xbox Live Arcade Wednesday time again. This week we have an evolved version of Pac-Man weighing in at 49.56MB which will set you back 800 Microsoft Points. This edition offers up new mazes which dynamically change during gameplay, a number of different timed modes and enhanced graphics.

The trial version allows you to play "Championship Mode", normally limited to five minutes but for the demo capped to three minutes. The classic gameplay is unmistakable and is still here in abundance as you try and gobble as many pellets and fruit as possible, avoiding the ghosts "Blinky", "Pinky", "Inky" and "Clyde" and eating the occasional power pill. The graphics are pleasant and what you'd expect from an evolution of the game with some nice touches but nothing so overstated as to distract you from the game.

As it's an Xbox Live Arcade game the obligatory leaderboards are available for each mode and there are 12 achievements on offer totalling 200 gamerscore points. If you're a fan of Pac-Man then I'm sure you'll appreciate this update.

The Darkness - Hellish Other World Footage

There's been some new footage released of imminent FPS game "The Darkness". The game is looking quite interesting and offers a bit of a twist to the genre. If you're getting a bit tired of countless Call of Duty et al clones then this may offer something new as you play as mafia hitman "Jackie Estacado" whom is cursed with demonic powers on his 21st birthday.

Hopefully a demo will be released on Xbox Live soon so I can try the game out before it's released later this month.

Hour of Victory Demo Impressions

The Hour of Victory demo is now available from Xbox Live Marketplace at 938MB. I wasn't aware that this demo was available until I read Jigsaw hc's Demo Review yesterday as it seems to have appeared without much aplomb. To be honest I can see why, as on the whole it's not a game that I'll be eagerly looking forward to playing again.

You may or may not be able to guess from the title that this is yet another WWII first person shooter. These days you really have to offer something new to stand out from the crowd in this overcrowded genre. So what does this game offer us? Well, in the demo you can choose your character from one of three on offer with different skills. There's the British SAS commando "Ross" with strength and endurance, a US ranger "Bull" a trained sniper with a grappling hook to climb to higher vantage points, and finally there's the covert operative "Taggert" whom can pick locks and cut fences. Depending on the chosen character you should be able to take different routes through the level. However, I'm going to have to take the word of the press on this as to be honest I didn't have the tenacity to try out each class.

The demo does not impress at all, the graphics are very humdrum and lacking detail and decent character animation. To compound problems the default controls felt lethargic until the sensitivity was upped at the expense of precision aiming as the shooting reticle jerked about the screen. Whereas games such as "Call of Duty" add a great deal of atmosphere to the gameplay, Hour of Victory is lacking in this department. I didn't feel like I was in a life and death situation at all, I was just going through the motions of moving from one objective to another without really needing to take cover. In the end it just isn't very exciting.

Granted this is a demo of a game and as such it is work in progress but this demo does nothing to help its cause. In some respects it would have been better to not release this as it doesn't compare well against its rivals. Unless this game changes drastically then it is one I will be avoiding.

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles Trailer

There's been a new trailer posted on GameTrailers recently for Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles which is due to appear on the Nintendo Wii. It looks like the game is going to be an on the rails shooter (think "House of the Dead") combining different story elements from Resident Evil: 0, 1, 2, 3 games and making use of both the Wiimote and nun-chuck controllers.

I'm a fan of the Resident Evil series and this looks quite entertaining if you want some instant non-thinking zombie killing gratification, but somehow I would have preferred some more unique content in a Wii exclusive game. The game is scheduled to be released sometime later this year.

Sony PS3 Poll Results

The recent poll asking the question "What can Sony do to ensure they come out on top?" has now finished. Thankyou to all readers that voted and although there wasn't a flood of votes (after all it was only the first poll!) the results are still pertinent.

As suspected it was "reducing the price" that got most votes and accounted for a 53% share. I certainly agree that this has to be the first step that Sony takes. Although they are still making a loss on hardware for each unit that is manufactured (estimated 100 GBP / 200 USD) this has to come sooner rather than later as they do not have the luxury of waiting for manufacturing costs to decrease to help offset a new price point.

When a price drop does happen it has to be a significant amount. Here in the UK there was an "unofficial" reduction of 25 GBP (50 USD) a few weeks after launch but I don't believe another similar drop would be enough. So how much would it take? From a personal point of view a drop of 100 GBP (200 USD) would entice me to buy a PS3 immediately, but from analytical rumours appearing on the Internet a drop of 100 USD (50 GBP) is more likely to happen.

There's no denying that the PS3 is a state of the art piece of kit, but I just feel that adding in so much cutting edge technology has backfired with regards to the manufacturing costs and the resulting retail price. If you have an opinion on the price point in your region, please feel free to leave a comment.

PS3 60GB Launch Prices
(figures in brackets show the equivalent price using current exchange rates)
(UK) GBP 425 / EUR 599 (840 USD / 102,173 YEN)
(US) USD 599 (303 GBP / 445 EUR / 72,862 YEN)
(JPN) YEN 59,980 (249 GBP / 367 EUR / 493 USD)
